Hilton, Hyatt, Leela and ITC are the new five star properties ready to open for service by the year end in Chennai. Come March, the 204 room Hilton located in Guindy will be launched first. It will be favoured by airline crews considering its proximity to the airport. The 327 room Hyatt coming up above the upcoming Ramee Mall on Anna Salai will start its service around the same time. The mall was supposed to open last Diwali with departmental store Shoppers Stop as the anchor store. The 330 room Leela is looking at creating a palace in the heart of a city' feel, by the beach near the Adyar creek, with a 25,000 sq ft conferencing and meeting area and a hall and pre-function area of 15,000 sq ft. The 600 room ITC Chennai the largest of them all, will house 55,000 sq ft of conference and exhibition facilities including a pillar-less main ballroom of 30,000 sq ft and 40,000 sq ft of luxury retail. Each hotel is working on eco friendly designs.
T Nataraajan, honorary secretary of Southern India Hotel and Restaurant Association (SIHRA) and CEO of GRT Hotels said that these four hospitality players hotels will add nearly 1,500 rooms to Chennai’s existing less than 2,000 rooms of four star and five star hotels. The Hyatt and Hilton will be attractive to the four star audience. The Leela and ITC Chennai will attract the five star clientele and will shortly face stiff competition from J W Marriott set to open in 2012. In the third quarter (ending December 2010), most hotels saw 80% occupancy, in both the preceding quarters, the occupancy was 65%. However, Chennai doesn’t depend on IT industry as Bangalore and Hyderabad, so the growth will be simultaneous and the hospitality industry is unlikely to see any wild fluctuations in pricing.
