Two Italian crew members on board Enrica Lexie were arrested by Kerala Police for killing two Indian fishermen mistaking them to be pirates off the coast of Kerala. Italy is taking all efforts to bring the two detained men under the law of their land. It is believed that Italy wants to give compensation to the family members of those deceased in the incident in return for the two crew members.
On this account Italian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister will met his Indian counterpart today. Meanwhile Italian Foreign Minister who is scheduled to arrive in Delhi will also discuss this issue. According to the Italian law Italian citizens should be tired in their Italy while Section 4 of IPC clearly states that any crime against an Indian will be tried in India. Even considering the UNCLOS, a passenger or merchant vessel does not have the right to take any action against pirates.
Considering various issues and keeping in mind the diplomatic relationship a solution will be sought out soon.
