Villupuram, TN's most unsafe district

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) records Villupuram as the most unsafe district in the state with maximum number of rapes, kidnappings and riots in 2009. The data for the year shows that though the district had comparatively fewer cases of theft, robbery, burglary and cheating, it registered 62 rape cases, 80 kidnappings and 223 incidents of rioting.

The high population stands good as one of the main reasons for this as it is one of the largest districts in the state with a population of 30 lakhs.District collector Dr R Palanichamy said that the geographical location also contributed to the high crime rate in the district. Human rights activists, however blame poor enforcement of law and order with cases of rape getting almost no response from the police. The upper castes dominate the district and the atrocities against scheduled castes and scheduled tribes are recorded as the highest.
