On Thursday, the five-party alliance of AIADMK started its campaign at the Island Grounds, Chennai. On a stage designed like the parliament building, top leader in the alliance spoke about the betrayal of the DMK-Congress alliance and the family-run politics of the DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa stated that the DMK rule in the past three years have contributed only to the price rise of essential items. She also highlighted the fact

the despite the crude oil price reaching convenient lows; the government in the Center did not take any step to help the common man.

Speaking about the power crisis in the state, she cautioned an agrarian crisis and stunted industrial growth. She said, “In 2006, the installed power generation capacity was 10,011 MW and this has gone down by 1,500 MW. Further, the central government has reduced its share to the state by 1,000 MW.” She also highlighted about the Spectrum scam and Arasu Cable Corporation and said all were done for the benefit of Karunanidhi’s family. She stated that unlike Karunanidhi she is selfless as she does not have a family of her own and hence will strive for the upliftment of the state.

On deciding who will be the next Prime Minister, she said, “If the AIADMK alliance wins all the 40 Lok Sabha seats it contests in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, then the state can decide who is fit to be the country's prime minister.”

Other prominent leaders who spoke were CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan, PMK founder S. Ramadoss, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, D Raja CPI national secretary, N Varadharajan CPI (M) state secretary and CPI state secretary D Pandian all accused the center of avoiding the Sri Lankan issue.

Later Jayalalitha introduced all the 40 candidates in the meeting.
