Ceasefire ends
Apr 15, 2009 09:45 AM

The 48-hour ceasefire comes to an end and the Sri Lankan government has rejected an option for unconditional truce in the area.

Speaking to a newspaper, the foreign secretary Palitha Kohona stated that unless the LTTE put down arms there is no scope for negotiation.

Meanwhile, the LTTE stated that the temporary ceasefire is only ‘eyewash’ and a ‘political drama’ to mislead the international society. The LTTE wants a

permanent ceasefire and peace negotiations according to its Tamilnet website.

Responding to this, the foreign secretary answered, “The demand for a permanent ceasefire and talks, supposedly to safeguard the people, is a pathetic bid to tug at the heart strings of the international community when defeat is imminent.”
