First Phase polls starts with a bang

Parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa faced violent Naxal attacks killing 10 people, which include five BSF personnel. During the early hours today, the Naxals sparked off a landmine that hit the bus carrying Border Security Personnel (BSF) in Latehar district, five BSF members and two civilians were killed in the attack.

A home guard and a policeman were shot dead by the naxals in Singhpur village in Gaya, Bihar. Two more policemen are said to be missing.

In Dantewada and Narainpur in Chhattisgarh, two voting machines were snapped by left wing extremists and an IED blast left one CRPF personnel dead.

Malkangiri district in Orissa also experienced some disruption, as voting machines and other related material were set on fire.

Some of the top leaders in the fray, in the first phase of polling, are the RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi and Yashwant Sinha and the TRS president K Chandrasekar Rao.
