Aishwarya, Akshay, writer Jayakanthan presented Padma awards

The Padma awards were presented by the President Pratibha Patil at the Ashoka Hall on Tuesday. There were 62 names on the list among them are Anil Kakodkar Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, who was responsible for the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal. In the Bollywood category Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Kumar Sanu were offered the prestigious award. Noted Tamil writer D Jayakanthan and academician from Kerala A Sreedhara Menon are a few to name.

Padma awards

Padma Vibhushan the second highest civilian awards was presented to five personalities, in addition to Dr Kakodkar, Dr Ashok Shekhar Ganguly, Director of Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India, Dr Chandrika Prasad Srivastava, Secretary General Emeritus of International Maritime Organisation, U.N., Govind Narain, civil servant of the ICS era and Prof. Jasbir Singh Bajaj, head of Academic Council of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and Sister Mary Nirmala Joshi, former superior of Missionaries of Charities. The Padma Bhushan was awarded to 14 distinguished personalities and Padma Shri to 44.

Some of the attendees for the function were Vice-President M Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
