In a weird case about sporting a handle bar mustache, the Supreme Court has upheld the termination order of Air India employee Joynath Victor De.

Victor De aged 55 years, who was working as Assistant Manager Flight Services, was terminated from service in September 2000 for refusing to trim his handle bar mustache. According to the operation manual of the Aircraft rules, 1937, “the cabin crew

should be clean shaven (except Sikhs) with neatly trimmed moustache not beyond the upper lip.”

Victor De went to the Kolkata High Court challenging the termination stating that it was his family custom and spiritual belief. But he lost the case and hence was forced to move the apex court, where the Division Bench consisting of Justices R V Raveendran and Markandeya Katju held, “If it is your family custom, keep it within the family. But when you have joined an organization you have to follow the rules.”
