| Chennai will soon be re-modeled like
the famous Times Square in New York City, M. Subramanian, Chennai
Corporation Mayor said at a meeting in the City on Friday. Architects from Kehl Architects, a firm based in Copenhagen, made a presentation on how cities could be redesigned, making them places for the public to congregate rather than run away from, at a meeting of Chennai Corporation councilors in Egmore. Mayor Subramanian recounted many instances of his experiences while travelling abroad. “In Amsterdam, there are 0.5 to one acre plots only for cycle parking. Can we imagine something like that here?”, he asked. As a pilot project an eight km cycle track will be created in Anna Nagar in another 15 to 20 days he said. This is part of a larger plan to link five square kilometers in Anna Nagar, which has 14 schools, with 33,000 students who commute to school everyday. 6,600 school children pedal to these schools everyday. In another two to three months time, Chennai’s parking zones will be notified. The Corporation is currently conducting a study to find the number of roads which are 40 feet or more in width. The Mayor said, “We will allow cars to park only on some roads. Every car owner will also have to pay for parking their cars on the road. Travels companies especially will have to pay heavily”. Thirty-six per cent of Copenhagen residents use bicycles to commute; just 23 per cent drive their own cars. The rest of them use public transport or walk said Jeff Risorm, Kehl Architects. |
