  A recent study done by Madras University and Chennai Corporation in association with the Kyoto University, Japan has shown that the northern parts of the city have lower resilience to climate related disasters compared to south and west.

The study called Climate and Disaster Resilience Index of Chennai, the study found Ice House to have the lowest resilience to disasters amongst all areas surveyed in the city, followed by Tondiarpet and Basin Bridge. The study analyzed five parameters – physical, social, economic, institutional and natural resilience of 10 zones of the city.

The report said, “More than 75 per cent of the area within Ice House zone is vulnerable to climate related disasters due to coastal exposure and more than 90 per cent of the buildings in Ice House area do not follow the ideal construction code”.

Nungambakkam, Saidapet and Ayanavaram were found to have the highest resilience to climate related disasters in the city the study revealed. Project coordinator RR Krishnamurthy said that, “The report has been presented to the Chennai Corporation, which will now undertake disaster mitigation and management activities in vulnerable areas”.
