Is Viswanathan Anand Indian or not?
  August 24, 2010 04.20 PM

Yes! Vishwanathan Anand may be World chess champion but the government is not convinced that he is an Indian citizen. The world's best chess player was denied an honorary doctorate he should have received on Monday, because the Government is confused whether Anand is an Indian or Spanish citizen.

Anand was to be given the honorary doctorate by the University of Hyderabad in 2009, but the university only formally forwarded the proposal to the Human Resource Development Ministry.

It was informed that Anand, who lives in Spain with his wife Aruna, is a Spanish citizen after the HRD Ministry asked the university twice with these queries. But the university still did not inform the Ministry that it needed the approval urgently as the awards ceremony was to be held on Monday.

‘'I do not understand from where the confusion on Anand’s citizenship had come from, Anand is and has always been a citizen of India”, Anand’s wife said when questioned on the issue.
