  Anand’s Indian nationality… Union Minister apologizes

The Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal apologized to the Indian chess Grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand over the issue of his Indian nationality. The University of Hyderabad proposed to confer an honorary doctorate on the chess champion but the Human Resource and Development Minister raised questions about his nationality.

Viswanathan Anand, who holds an Indian passport, declined to accept the honors over the doubts raised. Following this, Kapil Sibal clarified about his nationality and tendered an apology. Anand has accepted the apologies and will receive the doctorate.
