  Youth’s Joyful picnic turns tearful picnic

Five youngsters from Thiruvananthapuram drowned in Kundala dam in Munnar on Thursday in a tragic incident. All the five were hailed Kulathur, near Kazhakkuttam, in Thiruvananthapuram.

The incident took place when they got were caught in the currents while bathing in the dam. The mishap happened around 1.45 p.m. at the catchment area of Kundala dam, about 35 kilometres from Munnar. Police said the youths were a part of an eight-member team which came to Munnar for picnic.

Sources say that the six youths ventured into the water for having a bath. They chose a deserted spot about half a kilometer away from the boat club. In spite of repeated warnings from the boat employees youngsters ventured into the dam’ which was a danger zone.

Even as one youth went missing in the strong currents the others who tried to save him also got caught in the currents. The deceased have been identified as Sreejith, 25, Koottathinkal, Kulathur; Ratheesh, 25, son of Chandrasekharan Nair, Kulathur; Rajesh, 20, son of Rajendran Nair, Kaniyamvilayil, Arasummoode, Kulathur; Manu Mohan, 18, son of Mohan, Ambili, Arasummoode, Kazhakkuttam; and Bharath, 25, son of Balachandran, V B Mandiram, Varikkad, Kulathur.
