New captain for Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has decided to resign after the Pakistan tour. This decision was taken to give preparation time for the new captain for the forthcoming 2011 World Cup.

Jayawardene stated that, “In the best interests of the team, I have decided to stand down as the captain after the Pakistan tour."

was working in his mind for a long time and that the new captain needs time to shape up the team for the World Cup to be held in 2011.

Kumar Sangakkara will take over as the new captain of the Sri Lankan team. Sangakkara is the vice-captain and wicket keeper batsman of the team.

It is worth noting that the Sri Lanka had lost four ODI matches to India on their home ground. The captain scored just one half century and was in not in form of late. He led the team in 26 tests and 97 ODIs. His average is 64.70 in test cricket and 34.22 in ODI with 11 centuries to his credit.
