Poor takers for engineering courses in TN

February 04, 2010 04:34 PM

Around 51,000 B.E and B.Tech seats are vacant in the current academic year in the self financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

According to statistical report provided by officials, it was discovered that only 1,14,518 seats were filled between July and October.

The report also suggested that three engineering colleges and one architecture institution did not enroll even a single student this academic year. The institutions are Chennai Institute of Science and Technology for Women in Chengalpet; The Selvam Women Excellence Engineering Technology College in Trichy; and the St John's College of Engineering and Technology for Women in Vellore. It is worth a mention here that all three are exclusive women’s institutions.

It is astonishing to note that only less than half a dozen colleges were able to complete their quota of student strength for this academic year. There are private colleges that admitted even less than 10 students for the current year.

The reason for the downfall in the rates of admission is because of the poor quality of education provided by the institutions and the exorbitant cost involved in completing a course.
