Ambani may get 51% stakes in Liverpool

February 09, 2010 04:35 PM

One of the most popular football clubs in the world, Liverpool football club, may be acquired by the Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries or Subroto Roy, Chairman of Sahara Group. There are reports that the duo are bidding for 51 percent of the stakes.

Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks are the owners of the Liverpool Club after they acquired it in February 2007. But after some misunderstanding between the two, the club is now up for a bid.

Both the Indian businessmen have offered to clear off the Liverpool debts of £237 million and get a 51% stake in the club.

Though there were discussions on the bid early November last year, the Liverpool chief executive, Christian Purslow denied the reports. But there is no doubt that the club is running on a loss and is unable to meet its expenses.
