British TV fined for killing rat on reality show

February 09, 2010 04:35 PM

Media reports have said that the Australian court has fined the British commercial broadcaster ITV for killing a rat in the reality show.

Hearing the complaint from Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) ITV was fined 3,000 Australian dollars ($2,580) and ordered to pay court costs of 2,500 Australian dollars.

Reacting to this the television broadcaster has said that they doesn’t know killing a rat is an offense.

"The production was unaware that killing a rat could be an offense, criminal or otherwise, in New South Wales and accepts that further inquiries should have been made," an ITV spokesman was quoted as saying.
