July 03 2009 10:40 AM

Gay sex is legal, says Delhi High Court on Thursday. With this, India finds its place in the list of 127 countries that have legalized homosexuality.

Demark was the first country to legalize gay sex in the year 1989, which was followed by many European countries. In the year 1996, Norway, Sweden and Iceland enacted the law. Netherlands is the first country to give full civil marriage rights to gay couples in the year 2001.

An amendment was passed in the US to redefine marriage which earlier stated union of man and a woman.

India too has followed suit with the Delhi High court calling gay sex legal. In around 80 countries, gay sex is punishable by law.
