Two
medical colleges in Chennai are demanding
capitation anywhere between Rs 20
lakhs to Rs 40 lakhs per MBBS seat.
The Times of India have caught on
camera the officials of the Sri Ramachandra
University (SRU) and Shree Balaji
Medical College (SBM) demanding hefty
donations from students who have come
for admission.
Recently, the Tamil Nadu government
had banned capitation fees in private
medical colleges, but the ruling party’s
MP seems to be flouting the norms.
S Jagathrakshakan, the Union Minister
of State for Information and Broadcasting,
owns the SBM College.
SRMC, run by an industrialist V R
Venkataachalam, is demanding Rs 40
lakhs per seat, while the DMK minister’s
SBM is asking for Rs 20 lakhs per
seat.
The Times of India (TOI)
informed the state authorities about
the violation and they have promised
to conduct an inquiry.
Caught on camera is the administrative
officer of SBM, Johnson who was directing
a student to Shree Lakshmi Ammal Educational
Trust at 29, Tilak Street, T Nagar
for negotiations on the capitation
fees.
Johnson’s reply on fee reduction
is, “Minister (Jagathrakshakan)
tells us to charge not less than 20
lakh. Recommendations are all humbug.
Nothing will happen. You meet Lakshmi.”
The TOI when contacted the
director of medical education S Vinayagam,
claimed that “Nobody has complained
to us so far. If there is evidence,
we would investigate and forward requisition
for action against the colleges.”
The minister was not available for
comment claims TOI.
