First woman speaker elected

Meira Kumar will be the first woman speaker in the Lok Sabha after she was unanimously elected for the highest constitutional post. The resolution was moved by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi and seconded by Pranab Mukherjee, leader of the House and was approved by the House.

Meira Kumar is former Foreign Service official and daughter of late Jagjivan Ram. She won the elections from Sasaram in Bihar.

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee and LK Advani accompanied Meira Kumar to the Speaker’s chair.
