New vehicles to be taxed in TN

A proposal to levy road safety tax was devised by the Tamil Nadu government to compensate accident victims.

In the TN Assembly Transport Minister KN Nehru said that during registration, a road safety tax of Rs. 250 will be collected for two-wheelers and Rs. 1,500 for light motor vehicles and Rs. 2000 for other vehicles.

The new tax will come into effect from August 1, 2009 and necessary amendments to the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles act will also to be made from time to time, said the minister.

The revenue from the Road safety tax will go to families of accident victims, he said.
