Top Cops to be suspended on court orders

The Madras High Court ordered suspension of two top officials A K Viswanathan, Additional commissioner of Police (L&O) and former Joint Commissioner of North Chennai, M Ramasubramani from service with regard to the February 19th issue. The Bench comprising of Justice S J Mukhopadhaya, Justice V Dhanapalan and Justice K Chandru directed the lawyers to attend the court proceedings keeping in mind the welfare of the public and the dignity of the

noble profession. The Bench also stated that some other mode of protest can be adopted without interfering with the court activities.

It is worth noting that the State government cannot act against the orders of the Bench because they have assured to abide by the High Court order, in an undertaking given by the former to the Supreme Court in this regard. However, the affected parties can appeal in the Apex Court, it is stated.

Following the judgment, the Advocates Association President, R C Paul Kanakaraj and the TN Advocate Association President S Prabhakaran said that a decision will be taken after the rally on Thursday. However, they gave indications that the lawyers will return to work on Friday.
