PM not to contest for Lok sabha
Mar 04, 2009

Following the tense situation in the neighboring region, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will not contest for the Lok Sabha. Suppose the Congress retains power, the PM will continue to represent Rajya Sabha.

According to sources, contesting for Lok Sabha means extensive campaigning and direct involvement in party politics, thereby giving no time for focusing on security concerns in the South Asian region.

This has earlier raised a controversy when the leader of opposition L K Advani pointed out that the Prime Minister did not seek popular mandate while in office and demanded an amendment in the constitution stating that the Prime Minister should be elected from the Lok Sabha (Lower house).
