Sri Lankan team attacked!

Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by unidentified gunmen in Lahore, today. The bus in which the team traveled witnessed gunshots, killing eight people and injuring 6 team members. Among the dead were two civilians and 6 police personnel. Though, the players were shielded by the policemen some of players were injured in the attack.

According to Lahore police chief Habib-ur-Rehman, the cricket team was attacked by 12 gunmen who

seemed to be well trained terrorists near the Gaddafi Stadium where the third day of the second test match against Pakistan was to be held. They were reported to be holding rockets, hand grenades and other automatic weapons. The fight between security forces and the gunmen lasted for 25 minutes.

The fateful incident put an end to the current Sri Lankan cricket tour to Pakistan as the team will leave for Sri Lanka.

The coach Paul Farbrace and Thilan Samaraweera are hospitalized and their condition is out of danger, stated the Sports minister of Sri Lanka Gamini Lokuge. Other players who suffered minor injuries are Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tharanga Paranavithana and Ajantha Mendis.

This attack will have a bearing effect on the 2011 World cup where Pakistan is one of the host countries!
