New Secretariat to be inaugurated by the PM

March 02, 2010 03:42 PM

The new assembly complex will be inaugurated by none other than the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh on March 13, 2010.

The work is yet to be complete. The most important being the dome. The dome will be the highlight of the building and the Chief Minister does not want to go without the dome. Hence renowned art director Thota Tharrani was called to complete the replica of the dome at a whopping cost of Rs 2 crores. The original will cost Rs 25 crore which will be 30m tall and 45m in diameter, interpreting thatched archaic temples of South India. The contract is bagged by a Bangalore-based construction group and the safety features are being studied.

The work of the fake dome is in progress and is expected to look like the original.

According to a senior public works department official, “We initially thought we would go without the dome. But we did not want to miss out on showcasing one of the unique features of the complex. We scrapped the idea of a 20-storied building only because we wanted to give the dome good visibility. Having the inauguration without the dome would take away the icing from the cake.”
