Five companies apply for 3G spectrum

Five telecom services have applied for the for the radio frequency spectrum for third generation telephony. The companies include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Vodafone and Etisalat from the Gulf.

Commenting on this Airtel spokesperson said, "We have submitted the application for 3G with department of telecommunications (DoT). It is for pan-India spectrum."

When questioned on broadband wireless spectrum he said, "We cannot comment whether we will be submitting application for broadband wireless spectrum or not."

The government has also said that it has received four new applications for broadband services from QuLCOMM, Tata Communications, Tikona and Vodafone.
