Night shelters, footbridges, elite corporation schools part of budget

The Chennai Corporation Mayor M Subramanian presented the budget and there are no major changes announced, as no new taxes were imposed.

In an effort to promote the culture and language, shopkeepers were asked to put up name boards in Tamil. Around 50 bus routes will be named after Tamil scholars.

No new subways or flyovers planned, but six bridges will be seen to decongest traffic. Foot over bridges with lifts are also planned to help pedestrians. Cycle tracks have been planned to control traffic.

A school for deaf and dumb is proposed. Communicable disease hospital as well as night shelters for abandoned elders are planned. Elite corporation school in 10 zones will be established with best of teachers and will be called the school of excellence.

A 17 percent increase in the revenue was cited with the property tax collections likely to go up from Rs 320 crore to Rs 380 crore. The total budget was put at Rs 1,789.9 crore.
