Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit
on Wednesday announced in the state
Assembly that her government wants
to phase out auto-rickshaws from the
national capital.
"Auto-rickshaws are not a good
option -- they are uncomfortable and
pollute environment. Also, auto-rickshaw
drivers are unruly and harass passengers,"
she said.
"We are looking at the option
of electric cars and even electric
motorcycles," Dikshit added.
She also mentioned the best option
for travelling short distances.
"I was recently told that cycles
are fitted with electric motor --
this will be a good option for travelling
short distances," she added.
While on Thursday, Dikshit said no
such move was in the offing for now.
The Chief Minister said, "The
proposal to phase out auto-rickshaws
is certainly not going to be done
immediately."
Dikshit said many automobile manufacturers
had approached the Delhi government
with proposals of battery-operated
auto-rickshaws, cars and vans.
"We just want that in future,
cleaner fuels are used for public
transport. This is in a very embryonic
stage... let us see where the future
takes us," she added.
