How to end disparity in society-Meira Kumar

March 19, 2010 05:04 PM

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said there is a need to end disparity from society as there are people who still live with old mindsets and believe in casteism.

Meira while speaking on the occasion of diamond jubilee celebrations of Bharatiya Dalit Varg Sangh in New Delhi, said, ''Today, there are many people who believe in caste system despite calling themselves modern. Their minds have not changed and there is a need to give up old thoughts if we want to end disparity in society.''

The Lok Sabha Speaker recalled her father Babu Jagjivan Ram.

''My father was not even 27-years-old when he fought on two fronts. One was to make the country independent and other was to free society from the web of casteism,'' she added.
