Why did the minister pick up Rahul Gandhi’s shoes?

March 19, 2010 05:04 PM

The Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe came up with an explanation after almost a month for picking up Rahul Gandhi’s shoes during his Mumbai trip.

The Minister had said that he had picked up the Congress General Secretary’s shoes in apprehension that someone might place a bomb inside it.

Countering Shiv Sena’s comment calling it ‘jee-huzoor’ culture, the minister said, “Some parties, especially the Shiv Sena, raised a hue and cry because I held Rahul's shoes. Imagine what would have happened if someone had placed a bomb in them.”

Rahul Gandhi during his Mumbai trip paid homage to Dr Ambedkar’s statue situated at Ghatkapor and naturally he removed his shoe which Bagwe wanted to protect from the overwhelming crowd.

He added, “I also wanted to ensure the shoes were not pushed towards the statue of Ambedkar, who is our deity.”
