S Ve Shekher

Dignity Dialogue, a magazine which is praised for its special efforts for senior citizens, features S Ve Shekher on the cover page this issue. Shekher who will fall into the senior citizen belt in two years time opens up in this issue.

The net savvy S Ve Shekher blogs at www.sveshekhar.com, where he indulges in web conversation and sends e-mails to his fans. He is the first of his generation to go hi-tech. With no secretaries or personal assistants to aid him in his work, he is more than happy to function from his small but neat office room at his Raja Annamalaipuram residence.

Shekher entered dramatics at the age of 13, when he was a class VIII student, at the sets of Que Sera Sera by Major Sounderrajan where his father was providing special effects.

Having been discouraged by his family members on his entry into the drama world, Shekher took to Mechanical Engineering but his interests were in sound recording, still photography, editing, direction and production.

In the year 1974, he started his own drama troupe called the Natakhapriya and his first hero was none other than the veteran actor Nagesh. Seeing Shekher’s sense of humor off stage, Nagesh encouraged him on stage, which happened in 1975.

A hard worker, Shekher has to his credit a place in the Limca Book of Records for staging 8 different plays in a single day with a costume change done 88 times.

He termed his secret of success as ‘My brand of humor’. Shekher was introduced on the celluloid screen by K Balachander in Varumain Niram Sevappu. He also tried his hand in the small screen where he offered successful serials like Vanna Kolangal and Nam Kudumbam.

Apart from being an actor and politician, he has raised funds through his dramas for Tsunami, Kargil fund, and for various schools and hospitals. This was possible because the minimum ticket for his play is nowhere less than Rs. 200/- and of course he has a huge fan following who are willing to pay any price for his humor.

With all these achievements, it is still a wonder why he has not been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award.
