Divorce granted for 8-year old

Child marriages are still prevalent in many countries and the recent divorce of an 8-year-old with a 50-year-old has sent shock waves around the world.

The child was married to the man in the month of August last year and in the out-of-court settlement by the girl’s lawyer, Abdulla al-Jeteli, the child was allowed to divorce her husband.

Earlier, the case filed by her mother seeking her

daughter’s divorce was rejected by the Central Oneiza court stating that the girl has to attend puberty to file a petition. Though the mother wants to free her daughter it was the girl’s father who took a dowry of $13,350 in exchange for his daughter.

The law in Saudi Arabia does not prescribe the minimum age for marriage and most of the times the girls’ consent takes a back seat. The human rights activists are working towards defining the marriage age to end these atrocities.

This is not new to Saudi Arabia as many such incidents have occurred in the recent past and unless a law is framed in this regard child marriages will continue to take place feel human rights campaigners. Nevertheless, this incident could bring in a change in the legal system, it is believed.
