Violence marred the Central Chennai constituency (Ice House) on the polling day. The DMK party men unleashed violence on the six volunteers of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK). This is the constituency where the former Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran (DMK) is contesting.

Shops downed their shutters and the traffic came to a stand still for a couple of hours following the clash.

Later, paramilitary forces and police personnel including City Police Commissioner K Radhakrishnan visited the spot.

The MMK candidate Hyder Ali stated that the DMK cadres attacked MMK men out of fear that they may loose the constituency. He also stressed for re-poll in 10 booths in the Triplicane area.

The violence began when the MMK party men complained of malpractices in the booths near Ice House. Around 50 DMK cadres including local party functionary Kamaraj, councilor Cheran and Sasi assaulted the MMK men and also smashed their vehicle. Stone pelting also was witnessed causing serious injuries to the MMK volunteers.

The MMK cadres alleged that the police refused to register a complaint. But K Radhakrishnan (City Police Commissioner) stated to the reporters that both parties have complained and the matter is under investigation.
