The assassin of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, P R Ravichandran’s plea was opposed by the Tamil Nadu government on the grounds that the release may ‘infuse passion in him to act against the law.’ This reply was given taking into consideration the present situation in Sri Lanka.

In the reply the Tamil Nadu government stated, “The current fight between LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and the Sri Lanka government may again infuse passion in him to act against the law.”

The Supreme Court had in the month of October, 2008 issued a notice seeking reply from the Tamil Nadu government for Ravichandran’s plea.

It is worth noting that Ravichandran was involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination in 1991 and was convicted under various offences, which includes anti-terror law and explosive act. He was given both capital punishment and life sentence on January 28, 1998. Later the Supreme Court converted it to life sentence.

The advisory board has claimed that he might restore his links with the LTTE if he was released and hence asked the apex court not to release on the above said grounds.
