It is all over for LTTE, Lankans in celebration mode

The three decades war comes to an end as the LTTE has accepted defeat on Sunday offering to surrender. The Sri Lankan army completed their final operation at the LTTE stronghold in the northeast region of the island.

There was celebration in the air and the Rajapaksa government will announce their victory in the Parliament on Tuesday it is expected.

Though, the information of the top rebel leaders are yet to be ascertained which include Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Meanwhile the army has found bodies of number of rebels who have committed suicide. However, the identities of the bodies are yet to be confirmed by the officials. Sources say that Prabhakaran could be dead and are ascertaining marks on the bodies to verify their claim. Prabhakaran’s son Charles Anthony is also said to be dead.

According to a statement by a LTTE official Selvarasa Pathmanathan, “This battle has reached its bitter end. It is our people who are dying now from bombs, shells, illness and hunger. We cannot permit any more harm to befall them. We remain with one last choice--to remove the last weak excuse of the enemy for killing our people. We have decided to silence our guns.”

The army has surrounded the final patch of land of around 0.4 sq miles and killed around 70 rebels in the fighting.

The military spokesman stated that around 63,000 civilians escaped the rebel area over the past four days.
