The Krishna River overflowed its banks and as a result Vijayawada town is totally cut off from Hyderabad. The water from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and Prakasam Barrage was released on Sunday causing havoc in more than 400 villages.

Krishna and Guntur districts are being evacuated following the floods. More than four lakh people have been evacuated and were sent to relief camps.

The rescue operations are on as the water level is ebbing down.

The death toll in Andhra Pradesh was put at 37. It is expected that the death count may rise, as thousands are reported missing. The administration is running short of officials to count the exact figure as yet. Kurnool, Krishna, Guntur and Mahbubnagar are the most affected districts.

An estimated 18 lakh people in 400 villages are displaced due to the floods in the state. Around 180 villages in Kurnool, 100 in Guntur, 89 in Mahbubnagar and 22 in Nalgonda are in poor shape as the flood waters created havoc.

The columns of army personnel have been deployed for flood relief work in the state. Around 6 choppers, 254 boats and 1000 swimmers are also engaged in the flood rescue operations.
