Shortage of doctors hits Avadi CGHS dispensary

October 06, 2009 07:38 PM

Residents in and out of Avadi say that they face lots of hardships standing in long queues and spending a long time in the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) dispensary in suburban Avadi.

This dispensary which was established in 2006 is a busy place in Avadi which serves more than 300 patients every day.

Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said that the hospital does not have enough doctors and support staffs to handle huge crowds.

“In reply to my RTI [Right to Information] petition, the Public Information Officer said that four to five doctors had been appointed for “busy” CGHS dispensaries such as those in Avadi and Perambur. But, only three doctors are currently working in Avadi,” he said.

He also said that a patient has to wait nearly a month after registering to meet the specialist of internal medicine.

“On an average, it takes a month for the patients to consult the specialist of internal medicine after they register”—he added.
