October 19, 2009 09:17 PM

Villagers adjacent to Koonthakulam bird sanctuary in Tirunelveli district celebrated Deepavali without firing a single cracker.

They have taken this decision so that the birds in the sanctuary don’t get disturbed. Birds from all around the world come to Koonthakulam bird sanctuary in Tirunelveli during various seasons.

On hearing this Inspector-General of Police of Special Task Force C. Sylendra Babu sent a special team to celebrate diwlai with villagers. The special team distributed sweets and fruits during the celebration.

Babu also asked the villagers around forest areas not use crackers during the festive seasons in the interest of wild life.

“We are trying to showcase Koonthakulam as a model and create awareness in villages abutting forest areas. Villagers should come forward to give up use of crackers during festivals and other occasions in the interest of wild life”—he said.
