  Oct 18, 2010 06.25 PM

A recently married 25-year-old man set himself on fire in his thatched hut in Injambakkam on Saturday after his in-laws allegedly refused to give him a bike as promised before his marriage.

Lingeswaran, who was working as carpenter, had got married to a girl one month ago. Lingeswaran picked up a quarrel with his wife citing the promised bike. After his wife left for her parents' house, Lingeswaran set himself ablaze, police reported.

After noticing the fire which spread to three other huts in the neighborhood, the neighbors informed police and fire personnel. A fire tender from Siruseri rushed to the place and put out the fire. No one initially knew that the fire was triggered due to the setting of fire of the victim Lingeswaran. It was revealed only when the fire personnel recovered his charred body after extinguishing the fire.

A case has been registered at Neelankarai police station and the investigations are on.
