A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus driver suffered from a cardiac arrest and died before ramming into an electrical post and stopping in front of Maduravoyal police station on Wednesday.

Manoharan (50) of Perambur was on duty in an M59 bus plying from Vallalar Nagar to Thiruverkadu on Wednesday morning police said. Even as the bus passed through Maduravoyal Manoharan reportedly had chest pain. He put one hand on his chest and with the other the steering before losing control of the vehicle.

The passengers inside the bus screamed out for help before the bus rammed into an electric post snapping high voltage cables and stopped at the entrance of nearby Maduravoyal police station. Passengers rushed to the doorway and jumped out immediately after it came to a halt at the police station.

The police constable who was on guard outside the station ran off from his position and escaped as he acted fast on seeing the approaching bus. The cops found the driver unconscious. He died en route to the hospital.

The driver who operates from Vysarpadi bus terminus had reported to duty despite not keeping well a MTC source said. Five two-wheelers parked in front of the police station were damaged as the bus hit them and five passengers suffered injuries.
