Three girls studying nursing at the Government Nursing College in Tuticorin were arrested on charges of ragging their junior on Thursday following which the victim attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills. Police said cases of wrongful confinement have been booked under section 342 of IPC and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act against the three girls, who were studying in the final year in the college attached to the Government Medical College, Tuticorin. Muthuselvi (20), daughter of Rajasekar and a resident of Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli, was studying second year nursing course in the college police said. Muthuselvi, staying in the college hostel had swooned in the classroom on Wednesday morning. When doctors in the government hospital there examined her they found out that Muthuselvi had consumed excess sleeping pills. She reportedly told the police later that she had consumed the pills in an attempt to commit suicide upset over the ragging incident the previous night. Muthuselvi was summoned from her room by three of her seniors in the hostel the previous night police said. The three girls had then allegedly ragged her. Muthuselvi consumed the pills the next morning after the humiliation previous night. Police arrested Kanagavalli, Jayaradha and Revathi after obtaining a written complaint from Muthuselvi. The three were remanded to judicial custody, police said. |
