Chennai Mayor M. Subramaniam declared on Tuesday that the authorities will ensure that the city has more parking spaces than the current scenario.

Answering questions related to private enterprises holding rights for public property, Mr. Subramaniam told reporters that a major portion of illegal property has already been seized. "Thousand five hundred acres of land, worth Rs. 3000 crores, have already been seized and have been handed over to the public as parks, gardens and playgrounds." he said. Criticizing the illegal activities of reality developers on barren government property, the Mayor said "Nearly 600 to 900 grounds of land in 96 places in Chennai are in the Corporation’s radar for retrieval from anti-social elements. These will be converted into parking spaces for two and four wheelers, when seized."

Commenting on the usage of Tamil on the boards of commercial establishments, Mr. Subramaniam informed that nearly 12,000 boards, which were against the Government's mandate, have been removed and Chennai is 100% compliant on using Tamil as a mandatory language on name boards of commercial houses.
