The crisis surrounding Common Wealth
Games does not seem to cease with a new issue sprouting everyday,
the latest being a threat from mosquitoes.
With less than 40 days to go for the Common Wealth Games to be held
in New Delhi, officials have to confront another problem of late.
With the incessant rains in Delhi causing great damage to the infrastructure,
the city is also facing a huge rise in the number of dengue cases.
Caused mainly by mosquitoes, 6300 cases of dengue have been reported
so far.
Twenty-four Common Wealth nations, including Australia, England
and Canada, have requested the Organizing Committee (OC) of the
CWG to submit a report on actions taken to control dengue fever.
These countries have also asked the CWG officials to list down security
measures for prevention and cure for the disease as the Games village
is close to the Yamuna River. The CWG President Mike Cooper said
that "The security of the officials and athletes are extremely
important and hence the measures taken by the officials in India
hold high priority."
If this is not pressure enough, five Indian wrestlers have been
banned from participating in the Games after they failed a dope
test conducted by the authorities. Four men and one woman wrestlers
were banned as per the rules.
