Home Minister P. Chidambaram's 'saffron
terror' remark at the DGPs’ meet recently is not likely to fade
away from the minds of the public and politicians.
The remark made by Chidambaram caused a lot of havoc at the Parliament
and led to heated exchanges between the ruling and the opposition
parties. The issue took another ugly turn on Wednesday when P. Chidambaram
stood firm on the statement made by him earlier. Answering questions
from the media, Chidambaram said that he does not own the phrase
saffron terror. "I don't own the patent for the words Saffron
Terror. This has been a constant remark made by the Congress Party
against the opposition in the past,” was his claim.
He added that the purpose behind his remark has already been served.
Clarifying his statement, PC said "The words saffron terror
was made at right wing fundamentalists who are behind some bomb
blasts." Referring to the fundamentalists, he added that his
comment is more specific to religious fundamentalist groups.
In the midst of this all, 36 people in Chennai staged a protest
against Chidambaram's statement in front of his house. These 36
men were arrested and released after 3 hours.
