The Supreme Court set aside a stay order on the formation of a new district out of Amethi constituency, which is a Congress fort represented by Rahul Gandhi.

It was in May 2003 when Chief Minister Mayawati ordered the formation of a new district. But the plan was abolished by Mulayam Singh Yadav and his government which came into power in November the same year. A whole lot of petitions and stay orders were submitted and sought from the court and the issue was hanging in the balance for a long time now. Now the Verdict by the SC on Wednesday must have come as a huge relief to Mayawati.

The proposed new district, Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar, will have five taluks of Sultanpur and Rae Bareli districts which also form a part of the Amethi constituency.

This will be major setback to the Congress Party and Rahul Gandhi, in particular, who has been vowing to make UP a Congress stronghold.
