India will be playing against Serbia
in the opening round of next year's Davis Cup World Group tie.
India beat Brazil in the play-off tie in Chennai recently to retain
their place in the World Group. The victory was special as India
came back from a 0-2 deficit to win the tie 3-2. India will be traveling
to Serbia in March next year to play against this year's finalists.
Serbia, the number one team in the elite 16-team World Group, have
World No. 2 Novak Djokovic and two other top-50 players in Janko
Tipsarevic (34) and Viktor Troicki (47) in its ranks apart from
Nenad Zimonjic, World No. 3 in doubles.
India do not have any top-100 player, though Somdev Devvarman (117)
and Rohan Bopanna (473) showed that they can beat the big stars
when they beat world No. 27 Thomaz Bellucci and 74th ranked Ricardo
Mello in their recent matches.
India could have hosted the tie if it had been slotted against any
of the other five teams in the group.
