Clashes broke out in the coastal parts of the district here between processionists’ and fishermen during the Vinayaka idol immersion rally at Uthaya Marthandam near Karungal.

Thirty shops, including hotels, medical stores and commercial establishments and a cell phone tower, were burnt. The rally was on its way to the sea at Midalam around 4 pm to immerse the idols. The clash ensued between some fishermen and the people participating in the rally, when the processionists while passing through the route designated by the police damaged a few boats which were lying beside the road.

The incident took place as security, which usually used to be tight, was lax on account of the impending visit of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to Nagercoil on Sunday, to attend the DMK’s Mupperum vizha a source said.

A PDS outlet was completely gutted; a bus was set on fire and it was burning till late in the evening, in the absence of fire tenders to put out the blaze. The houses of a few fishermen were also damaged.

A few policemen were also injured after miscreants pelted stones on their vehicles. Shanmuga Rajeswaran and District SP Rajendran visited the spot. Following this the DIG held talks with the fishermen’s groups as a result of which the idol immersion rally went ahead under full police protection.
