It took four World Cups before India
and Pakistan actually came face
to face. It was the 1992 Benson
and Hedges World Cup held in Australia
and New Zealand. At the SCG, India
won the toss and chose to bat. Aided
by a good top order performance
with contributions from Jadeja,
Azhar and Kambli, the middle order
guided by a stroke filled fifty
from the young Sachin Tendulkar
posted a then challenging 216. In
a chase that never really got going,
only Aamir Sohail and Miandad put
up a fight, but they eventually
fell well short of the target. Thus
began India’s trot of dominance
over Pakistan in big tournaments.
But, while India got the better
of Pakistan one on one, they ultimately
had the last laugh winning the World
Cup with victory over England in
the finals.
